ピートさんの歌でなかったのは残念だが、どんな歌なのかはこれでわかりました。
とてもきれいな、悲しげな曲です。
確かに女声の方がいいかもしれません。

"When I was touring Japan in 1967 I met a young professor, Yuzuru Katagiri, who published a literary magazine of Japanese poetry in the English Language. I thought it interesting that they were trying to master our crazy language. I love magazines - I'm a magazinaholic - so I subscribed.
Shortly after, I read this poem in the professor's magazine. I could not get the poem out of my mind so I put a tune to it and got permisson to record it for Colombia Records. The woman who wrote this at age 31, Noriko Ibaragi, is now a well-kown poet. When I next returned to Japan, she came up on the stage and recited it in Japnese and I sang it in English. Sometimes putting poems to music works and sometimes it does not. I have tried with many poems to put music to them and they have not worked. My guess is that no two people will accompany this one the same way.
The poem and song are a good answer to the male English poet who tossed off the line, 'Women are. Men do.'"

「私は1967年に日本を旅行している時、日本の詩誌を英語で出している若き教授、片桐ユズルさんに会った。我々のとんでもない言葉をマスターしようとしているなんて、おもしろいなと思った。私は雑誌が大好きだ。雑誌中毒なのだ。それで定期購読した。
　そのすぐ後に、この教授の雑誌で私はこの詩を読んだ。この詩を頭から追い出すことができなくなったので曲を付け、許可を得てコロンビアからレコードを出した。31歳でこの詩を書いた茨木のり子さんは、今では著名な詩人である。私がその次に日本に行った時、茨木さんがステージに上がってこの詩を日本語で朗読して、私が英語で歌った。詩に曲を付けると、うまくいく時もあるし、うまくいかない時もある。私はたくさんの詩に曲を付けてきたのだが、あまりうまくいかなかった。たぶん、二人の人間が同じように一つの詩を歌うことはけっしてない。
　この詩と曲は、次の詩を投げかけた英国の男性詩人に対する、良い答えとなろう。『女は「である」もの。男は「する」もの。』」
