北の時間、南の時間 CHRONICLES #110

There was a difference in the concept of time, too. In the South, people lived their lives with sun-up, high noon, sunset, spring, summer. In the North, people lived by the clock. The factory stroke, whistle and bells. Northerners had to "be on time." In some ways the Civil War would be a battle between two kinds of time. Abolition of slavery didn't even seem to be an issue when the first shots were fired at Fort Sumter.

時間の概念にも違いがあった。南部では、日の出、真昼、日没、春、夏といったものによって暮らしていた。北部では、時計によって暮らしていた。工場では号笛や鐘を鳴らして時刻を知らせた。北部人は「定刻どおり」でなければならなかった。いくつかの点において、南北戦争は二種類の時間の間の闘いになるのだろう。サムター要塞で最初の銃撃があった時には、奴隷制の廃止でさえ問題ではないようだった。

南部と北部では、時間の流れ方が違ったんですね。
今の日本では、明らかに農本主義的な南部の時間に共感を抱く人が多いのではないでしょうか。

世界に唯一の強大な帝国となった今の合州国を見ていると、南北戦争は本当にアメリカを救ったのか、大いに疑問を感じます。
あの時、アメリカは分裂すべきだったのかもしれません。
